Byzantium

By·zan·ti·um [ bi zánshee əm, bi zántee əm ] ancient Greek city on the site of modern-day Istanbul, conquered by the Romans in ad 196, and rebuilt in ad 330 by Constantine the Great, who renamed it Constantinople. As the capital of the Byzantine Empire (until 1453), it was the largest city in the Christian world.
